He was born in Bonn in 1770 and lived to 1827. While Bonn is
proud of him, the word is that Beethoven did not reciprocate the feeling.
Franz Liszt is responsible for the statue which was erected on Beethoven's
75th birthday (Queen Victoria was in attendence). Listz contributed financially
and also organised concerts to fund the statue. The four sides of the base
represent
four types of music: instrumental, symphonic, spiritial and opera. (Why
a lyre-playing woman riding a horse that has a woman's head and chest
should represent symphonic music, is understoood on some mythology plane
that is beyond me.)
